A 15-year-old herder, identified as Aliyu Ismael, has been killed in targeted attack by Berom Militia while grazing livestock in an open field between Darwat and Wereng Camp villages in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.

Security sources said the incident occurred at about 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 1, 2026, with the attackers suspected to be Berom militia members within the community.

Troops of Sector 6, Operation Enduring Peace, reportedly responded to a distress report and proceeded to the scene, where they discovered the lifeless body of the teenager.

Ismael was said to be from the Luggere Fulani hamlets in Riyom LGA.

Following the discovery, the troops initiated a pursuit of the suspected assailants in the general area, but no contact was established.
The deceased's body was subsequently evacuated by family members for burial.

Security sources said an investigation was ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the killing and identify those responsible.

The killing adds to security concerns over attacks on herders and other civilians in parts of Plateau State, where tensions and retaliatory violence have continued to threaten lives and livelihoods.

Security agencies have continued efforts to pursue suspected perpetrators and engage community leaders to prevent further violence.
Residents have been urged to remain calm, avoid reprisal attacks and provide credible information to security agencies to support investigations.
