Former Chief of Army Staff and Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Republic of Benin, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Yusufu Buratai (Rtd), CFR, has paid tribute to the late Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty Oba (Dr) Akinloye Olalere Owolabi Olakulehin, who died at the age of 90.

In a heartfelt message issued on Sunday in Abuja, Buratai, who holds the traditional title of Aare Akinrogun of Ibadanland, described the late monarch’s reign as one marked by “commitment to the progress and unity of Ibadanland and Nigeria as a whole.”

Oba Olakulehin ascended the throne as the 43rd Olubadan on July 12, 2024, and ruled until his passing on July 7, 2025.

Buratai noted that the monarch’s journey to the throne reflected his distinguished character and rich experience as a teacher, retired Major in the Nigerian Army, entrepreneur, and seasoned politician.

“His rise began in 1983 as the Mogaji of the Ige Olakulehin Family and culminated in his ascension as the Balogun of Ibadanland before becoming the Olubadan,” Buratai said.

He described Oba Olakulehin as more than a traditional ruler, saying he was a “beacon of hope and unity” who promoted inclusivity and harmony among Ibadan’s diverse communities.

“His philanthropic activities and political engagements revealed a deep-seated commitment to societal advancement,” he added.

Buratai said the monarch’s legacy of peace, selfless service, and developmental leadership would remain etched in the memory of Ibadan people and Nigerians at large.

“As we mourn his loss, we must also celebrate a life lived in service to humanity. May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may his cherished values guide future generations,” Buratai stated.

Oba Olakulehin, a revered custodian of Yoruba culture and heritage, is remembered for his contributions to communal development and traditional leadership.
