The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has commissioned a series of welfare and infrastructure projects within the 6 Division Nigerian Army, in line with his “Soldier First” mantra aimed at improving the living standards of personnel.

It was gathered that  the projects, inaugurated on Tuesday, included the 16 Brigade Annex Building Complex and a new Detention Centre, as well as the groundbreaking for 20 units of two-bedroom flats for Senior Non-Commissioned Officers at Elele Cantonment.

Also commissioned were a 33,000-volt emergency electricity line, donated by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to 16 Brigade, and the remodeled official residence of the Commanding Officer, 343 Artillery Regiment.

Oluyede said the projects were part of deliberate efforts to provide befitting accommodation, modern infrastructure, and improved welfare for officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army.

He reiterated that the Army under his leadership remained committed to prioritising the well-being of troops, stressing that their welfare directly impacts operational efficiency.

“These projects demonstrate our resolve to match words with action under the ‘Soldier First’ policy. Our men and women in uniform deserve the best facilities to motivate them as they continue to make sacrifices for the peace and security of our country,” he said.

The COAS commended the NDDC for supporting the Nigerian Army in addressing critical infrastructure needs, urging other stakeholders to emulate the gesture.

He charged the benefiting formations and units to make good use of the facilities, adding that their proper maintenance was crucial in sustaining the gains made.

Senior officers, soldiers, traditional leaders, and representatives of the NDDC attended the ceremonies.
