Fact Check: Viral video claiming Nigerian military supports bandits is false
By: Zagazola Makama
A video circulating on social media alleging that the Nigerian military is providing support to bandits is false and misleading.
Checks by Zagazola Fact Check revealed that the video, which resurfaced recently, first appeared online in early 2024 and has no connection with Nigeria or its Armed Forces.
The footage shows some individuals that look like bandits and some foreigners disembarking from a helicopter in Darfur, Sudan, during the ongoing political crisis in that country.
Independent monitoring of the video confirms it originated from the conflict in Sudan’s Darfur region and has been wrongly repackaged to create disaffection in Nigeria.
This is not the first time misleading content has been circulated to undermine the morale of troops and fuel public distrust in ongoing counter-terrorism operations.
Spreading unverified materials of this nature not only distorts public understanding but also plays into the propaganda machinery of terrorists and criminal groups.
Nigerians are therefore urged to exercise caution, verify information before sharing, and refrain from circulating content that could promote chaos or undermine the sacrifices of security forces working to restore peace.
Zagazola Fact Check restates its commitment to debunking disinformation and ensuring that the public has access to accurate and verified information.
