A suspected member of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed affiliate, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), was neutralised on Monday during a gun battle with local vigilantes in Ezinifite community, Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Zagazola Makama gathered that the incident occurred at about 7:30 a.m. when over 15 armed men reportedly stormed the community from neighbouring Imo State through Amalum Village boundary.
According to the Agunechamba Vigilante Group of Ezinifite, the gunmen were suspected to have come with the intention of invading and attacking the community before they were engaged in a fierce gun duel.
During the exchange of fire, one of the assailants was neutralised while others fled into the surrounding bushes with gunshot wounds.
A pump-action rifle was recovered from the deceased suspect, while his body was deposited at the Ezinifite mortuary.
The sources said police tactical teams were immediately dispatched to the scene, but the attackers had fled before their arrival.
He said the area has since been cordoned off and intensive bush combing operations were ongoing in collaboration with local vigilantes to arrest the fleeing suspects.
The sources said that the vigilance group were commended for their alertness and urged residents to remain calm and continue to support security agencies with credible information to rid the area of criminal elements.
