The Air Component of Operation FANSAN YAMMA Sector 1 has engaged suspected terrorist elements at Rijana Hill in Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State following intelligence indicating the gathering of armed elements in the area.
The operation was conducted on Friday, Oct. 9, by an A-29 Super Tucano aircraft following a directive by the Air Component Commander for an immediate response to the emerging threat.
According to the operational account, the aircraft had earlier provided aerial escort and surveillance for a convoy conveying the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 1 Division, Nigerian Army, and the Air Component Commander from Kaduna to Maraban Rido.
During the escort mission, the crew maintained visual and radio contact with the convoy while scanning surrounding areas for potential threats. No threats were observed during that phase of the operation.
The mission was subsequently redirected to Rijana Hill after intelligence indicated the convergence of an undetermined number of suspected terrorists in the area.
The aircrew reportedly sighted the suspected elements, who attempted to flee and seek cover upon noticing the aircraft.
The aircraft engaged the identified positions with onboard weapons before conducting a further aerial scan of the area. No additional threats were observed during the follow-up assessment, after which the aircraft returned to base.
The operation demonstrated the capacity of the Air Component to combine convoy protection, aerial surveillance and rapid response to emerging threats within a single sortie.
The Air Component of Operation FANSAN YAMMA Sector 1 said it would sustain operational activities in coordination with other security forces to counter terrorist threats, protect personnel and communities, and support efforts to restore lasting peace and security across the operational theatre.
The operational account did not specify the number of suspected terrorists killed or injured in the engagement.
