OPEP Facilitates Settlement as Herders Agree to Compensate Farmers in Plateau

By Zagazola Makama

Troops of Sector 5, Operation ENDURING PEACE (OPEP), have facilitated an amicable settlement between farmers and herders following the destruction of farmlands in parts of Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The development followed the destruction of 38 farms in Dambwash, Danbukor and Fokkos villages on Aug. 16.

Zagazola Makama reports that troops facilitated the settlement at about 11:10 a.m. on Aug. 19 as part of efforts to prevent the dispute from escalating into violence.

Following discussions between the affected parties, the herders agreed to compensate the farmers for the damaged farms.

The 42 cattle earlier intercepted in connection with the incident were subsequently released to their owners.

The settlement is part of ongoing efforts by Operation ENDURING PEACE to promote dialogue and peaceful resolution of farmer-herder disputes while maintaining security across vulnerable communities in Plateau State.

Security sources said troops would continue to engage communities and stakeholders to prevent local disputes over farmland and livestock from escalating into wider security challenges.
