Police operatives in Borno State have foiled an attempted kidnapping and arrested one suspect following a coordinated operation in the Bayan Forestry area of Maiduguri.
Police sources said the incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday when about seven armed men reportedly invaded a residential area with the intention of abducting the wife of a resident identified as Mustafa.
According to the sources, a distress report was received by the police, prompting an immediate response from officers attached to the Central Market Division and Operation Patrol teams.
“The armed men attempted to kidnap the woman but their plan was thwarted following the swift intervention of security operatives.
“Police patrol teams led by the Divisional Police Officer responded promptly to the area and engaged in efforts that led to the arrest of one suspect,” the source said.
The sources added that the suspect was apprehended with the assistance of members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF).
Other members of the gang reportedly escaped into a nearby bush before security operatives arrived.
Police authorities said efforts had been intensified to track and apprehend the fleeing suspects.
They added that the case would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The authorities commended the collaboration between the police and the CJTF, describing it as critical to the success of the operation.
They also urged residents to remain vigilant and continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies to support ongoing efforts to combat kidnapping and other violent crimes.
