Troops have foiled an attack by suspected Berom militias on Fulani communities in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State after engaging the attackers in a gun battle that forced them to retreat.

Security sources told Zagazola Makama that troops of Sector 8, Sub-Sector 81, deployed in Gyambwas, responded at about 3:25 p.m. on July 5 following reports of sporadic gunfire around the Gimti Galadima, Kobodon and Kaduno areas of Mangu LGA.

According to the sources, upon arrival at the scene, the troops discovered that the armed group was attempting to set ablaze several Fulani settlements.

The troops immediately engaged the attackers with superior firepower, forcing them to withdraw toward Kugot village in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area.

Military sources said 58 rounds of 12.7mm anti-aircraft ammunition were expended during the engagement to suppress the attackers and prevent the destruction of the affected communities.

The incident triggered panic among residents, with several Fulani women and children fleeing across the river toward Langai for safety.

No casualty among troops was reported during the operation.

Security sources said troops have continued to dominate the general area through aggressive patrols to prevent a renewed attack and reassure residents of their safety.

The latest operation forms part of ongoing efforts by security forces to contain communal violence and prevent further escalation of attacks across Plateau State.
