Troops of Sector 8 under Operation Enduring Peace have intercepted an estimated 1,000 cattle after responding to reports of the destruction of a proposed grazing area and surrounding settlements in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Sources told Zagazola Makama that the troops were mobilised at about 9:00 a.m. on Aug. 6 following complaints that suspected Fulani herders had damaged a proposed grazing location around the Alohom general area.
On arrival, the troops discovered an estimated 1,000 cattle roaming the area without any herders in attendance.
The sources said security personnel also found items at the location indicating that the herders had spent the night in the area before abandoning the livestock and fleeing.
The cattle were subsequently moved to a secure location pending further administrative and legal action.
Security sources added that the leadership of the Fulani community in the area has been summoned for a meeting as part of efforts to identify the owners of the livestock, address the incident and prevent further tensions.
The interception is part of ongoing measures by Operation Enduring Peace to curb farmer-herder conflicts and maintain peace in Plateau State, while investigations into the reported destruction and ownership of the cattle continue.
