At about 8pm, on 9 May 2026, Troops of Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP), in collaboration with other security agencies, contained rising tension in parts of Plateau State following reported killings in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, which triggered fears of renewed communal confrontation.
Security sources told Zagazola Makama that the situation escalated after reports of the killing of some Fulani youths in a rural community in Barkin Ladi, an incident which led to heightened agitation and the mobilisation of youths from both affected communities.
According to the sources, members of the two communities were said to have begun mass mobilisation for a possible confrontation before troops swiftly intervened to prevent further escalation.
Troops of Operation Enduring Peace, supported by other security agencies, reportedly moved into the area, deployed personnel to strategic locations and engaged community leaders to restore calm.
“The prompt deployment of troops and engagement with stakeholders helped to de-escalate what could have turned into a wider confrontation,” a security source said.
Meanwhile, security sources also confirmed that troops were responding to a separate developing situation in Bassa Local Government Area, where suspected rogue youth elements were allegedly planning an attack on Fulani settlements.
Reinforcements were immediately deployed to the area to forestall any outbreak of violence, with troops currently conducting patrols and dominance operations to stabilize the environment.
Security authorities said the situation across the affected local government areas was being closely monitored and contained through sustained military presence and coordinated inter-agency operations.
The developments are part of a recurring pattern of tit-for-tat violence that has continued to define parts of Plateau State, often triggered by unresolved disputes, reprisal attacks and heightened communal tensions.
Troops have since intensified peace enforcement operations, patrols and intelligence-driven deployments across vulnerable communities to prevent further breakdown of law and order.
