Troops of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) have repelled suspected militia members during a fighting patrol in Apa Local Government Area of Benue State, recovering weapons, ammunition and other items abandoned by the fleeing attackers.
Military sources disclosed that the operation was carried out on June 4 after troops of Sector 1 OPWS received intelligence on the activities of armed militia elements in Adija community.
According to the sources, the troops swiftly mobilised to the area and made contact with the suspected militia, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
The superior firepower and aggressive response of the troops reportedly forced the armed group to retreat, abandoning weapons and other equipment as they fled the scene.
Items recovered during the operation included one AK-47 rifle, three magazines, 38 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, one motorcycle and other sundry items believed to have been used by the suspects.
Military authorities said the recovery represents a significant setback to the activities of armed groups operating within the area and demonstrates the effectiveness of ongoing offensive operations aimed at denying criminal elements freedom of action.
The recovered weapons and other items have been taken into military custody for further investigation and exploitation.
Security forces have continued to intensify patrols and clearance operations across parts of Benue State in a bid to curb militia activities, protect vulnerable communities and restore lasting peace in affected areas.
Efforts are ongoing to track and apprehend the fleeing suspects.
