Troops of Operation Enduring Peace have launched a manhunt for suspected Berom militia members following an attack on cattle in Torok village, Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Security sources told Zagazola Makama that troops under Sector 6 of Operation Steadfast Peace responded to a distress call at about 6:45 p.m. on June 1 over an attack on livestock in the community.
According to the sources, troops arrived at the scene and discovered one cow had been killed by suspected Berom militia members who fled before security personnel reached the area.
The sources said troops immediately dominated the general area with fighting patrols to track down the perpetrators and prevent any retaliatory attacks that could heighten tensions in the locality.
“The swift deployment was aimed at apprehending those responsible and ensuring that the incident does not trigger further violence,” a security source said.
Riyom and other parts of Plateau have witnessed recurring farmer-herder and communal tensions, with attacks on livestock and farmlands often serving as flashpoints for wider conflicts.
Troops said routine patrols remained ongoing across the Joint Operations Area to protect vulnerable communities, schools, places of worship and other critical national infrastructure.
They reaffirmed the commitment of security forces to maintaining peace and stability in the state, adding that troops remained vigilant and prepared to respond to emerging security threats.
The authorities also urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information that could assist ongoing investigations and peacebuilding efforts.
