Buratai mourns Buhari, says Nigeria lost a statesman of principle and conviction

Former Chief of Army Staff and Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Republic of Benin, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusufu Buratai (rtd), CFR, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing his death as the end of an era marked by “uncommon dedication to nation-building and steadfast devotion to the ideals of honesty, integrity, and patriotism.”

In a condolence message issued in Abuja on Sunday, Buratai said the demise of the former President in London at the age of 82 represents a profound personal and national loss.

“President Buhari’s death marks the end of an era, an era defined by resolute leadership and principled service. Nigeria has lost one of its greatest sons, and the world has lost a statesman of conviction,” the statement read.

Reflecting on his personal relationship with the late President, Buratai recalled that he was appointed as Chief of Army Staff by President Buhari on July 13, 2015, at a time the country was grappling with serious security challenges.

“With his clear strategic direction and consistent support, I was able to lead the Nigerian Army through a historic transformation. The military became more professional, better trained, and better equipped,” Buratai said.

He noted that under Buhari’s leadership, the Nigerian Army successfully reclaimed all territories previously held by Boko Haram and made “significant strides” in counterterrorism, anti-banditry, and anti-kidnapping operations.

Buratai also thanked the former President for appointing him as Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Republic of Benin, stating that it was a further demonstration of Buhari’s enduring confidence in his service to the country.

He extended heartfelt condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR; the Emir of Daura; the Government and people of Katsina State; the Daura Emirate; and the entire nation.

“We are all united in grief over this irreparable loss,” Buratai said, adding that Buhari’s legacy of integrity, simplicity, discipline, and patriotism will continue to inspire generations.

“May Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings, reward his good deeds, and grant his noble soul Aljannatul Firdaus,” he prayed.
