The commissioning of a new Soldiers’ Club at Dodan Barracks in Lagos on Thursday has further reinforced the Nigerian Army’s efforts to strengthen troop welfare, morale and cohesion under the leadership of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu.
The modern recreational facility, inaugurated during a ceremony hosted by the 81 Division, is designed primarily for Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) and reflects the Army’s push to create an enabling environment where soldiers can unwind, build camaraderie and deepen esprit de corps outside the rigours of operational duties.
Zagazola reports that the project was delivered by the Commander, 45 Division Engineers, Brig.-Gen. M. O. Momoh, under the supervision of the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 81 Division, Maj.-Gen. Farouk Mijinyawa.
Speaking during the event, the COAS said the Soldiers’ Club symbolises his renewed commitment to bolstering the welfare and well-being of troops across formations, adding that a motivated soldier remains the foundation of a professional and effective fighting force.
According to him, the Nigerian Army under his command is prioritising welfare-driven infrastructure because such investments directly enhance operational readiness and the psychological resilience of personnel.
“Facilities like this create much-needed spaces for relaxation, informal interaction and bonding among our men. When soldiers feel valued, their morale improves and the overall performance of the Army is strengthened,” he said.
The club, equipped with modern amenities, is expected to serve as a hub for social engagement, training-support activities and healthy recreation tailored for NCOs, who form the backbone of military operations nationwide.
Lt.-Gen. Shaibu commended the 81 Division for what he described as a timely and well-executed project that aligns with his vision of a highly motivated, disciplined and professional force capable of meeting Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
He reaffirmed that troop welfare will continue to top the Army’s priorities, noting that improved living and recreational conditions are integral to sustaining cohesion within units and enhancing troops’ sense of belonging.
“As we continue to confront multiple security threats across the country, it is essential that our soldiers remain mentally, emotionally and physically prepared. Welfare facilities such as this are part of our comprehensive approach to strengthening the fighting spirit of the Nigerian Army,” he added.
For many personnel at Dodan Barracks, the new facility is expected to provide a much-needed boost to morale, offering a safe and conducive space to relax after demanding operational tasks.
The commissioning also forms part of broader welfare reforms being pursued across formations, including the renovation of barracks accommodation, improvements in medical services, enhanced family support programmes, and increased training opportunities for soldiers and their families.
