The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division of the Nigerian Army, Maj.-Gen. C.R. Nnebeife, has undertaken an operational visit to Ekiti State to assess security arrangements ahead of the state’s off-cycle governorship election scheduled for June 20.
The visit, which took place on June 4, formed part of efforts by the Nigerian Army to ensure adequate security preparedness and support for a peaceful electoral process.
Maj.-Gen. Nnebeife and his entourage were received at the headquarters of the 148 Battalion in Ado-Ekiti by the Commander, 12 Brigade, and the Commanding Officer of the battalion.
Military sources said the primary objective of the visit was to conduct an on-the-spot assessment of security measures and operational readiness in the state ahead of the forthcoming election.
During the visit, the GOC received detailed operational briefings on the security situation and ongoing preparations by troops and other security agencies to maintain law and order throughout the electoral period.
The senior officer also visited the battalion’s permanent location, where he inspected the ongoing construction of military barracks and other infrastructure projects aimed at improving troop welfare and operational effectiveness.
Addressing officers and soldiers, Maj.-Gen. Nnebeife commended the troops for their dedication and professionalism, urging them to remain vigilant and maintain high standards of discipline as they prepare for election security duties.
As part of the visit, the GOC paid a courtesy call on the Governor of Ekiti State, during which discussions were held on security collaboration and measures to ensure a peaceful and credible electoral process.
Military authorities described the visit as successful and incident-free, noting that it underscores the Nigerian Army’s commitment to supporting democratic institutions and ensuring a secure environment for citizens to exercise their civic responsibilities.
The governorship election in Ekiti State is expected to attract heightened security attention, with relevant agencies coordinating efforts to safeguard lives, property and critical electoral infrastructure.
