A cholera outbreak has claimed one life and infected 24 people in Cross Kauwa community, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State, prompting an emergency medical response by the Nigerian military and local health authorities.

Security and health sources told Zagazola that the outbreak was reported on July 4 in the lakeside community, with affected residents immediately evacuated to the Primary Health Care Centre for treatment.

According to the sources, a medical team from the 19 Brigade Medical Centre was swiftly deployed to the area to support local health workers in containing the outbreak.

The team established quarantine measures and commenced emergency treatment for affected patients to prevent further spread of the disease.

The sources said that, as of the latest report, 24 persons had been affected, while one fatality had been recorded.

They added that the military medical team was working closely with the relevant state authorities and Kukawa Local Government officials to implement sustainable disease control and public health interventions.

The sources noted that surveillance and response efforts remain ongoing, with the 19 Brigade Medical Centre closely monitoring the situation to ensure the outbreak is contained and to prevent additional infections.

Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal disease caused by ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. Public health experts say the disease can spread rapidly in communities with limited access to safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene, but can be effectively treated when detected early.
