Operatives of the Taraba State Police Command have arrested a 57-year-old man for allegedly being in possession of a locally made Beretta pistol and ammunition in a crackdown on illegal firearms.
Sources told Zagazola Makama that the suspect, Alhaji Ibrahim, was apprehended in the late hours of July 18 by police officers attached to the Amar Outstation of the Old Muri Division while on a joint patrol with local hunters.
During the operation, officers recovered a locally made Beretta-style pistol and 12 rounds of ammunition from the suspect.
During preliminary interrogation, the suspect reportedly told investigators that he acquired the firearm for self-defence.
Police authorities have transferred the suspect and the recovered exhibits to the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) for further investigation.
The command said the arrest forms part of ongoing efforts to curb the proliferation of illegal firearms and strengthen security across the state.
