Suspected armed assailants have attacked an illegal mining site at Gero area in Plateau State, killing at least two persons and leaving several others injured, security sources have said.
According to a special situation report, troops deployed to the area were alerted by fleeing locals who reported that armed men had stormed the mining site and opened fire, causing panic and forcing workers to flee.
Security operatives who swiftly mobilised to the scene reportedly recovered two corpses, while one other body had earlier been evacuated by residents before the arrival of troops.
Two injured victims were also said to have been rushed to a medical facility, but one of them later died while receiving treatment.
Local residents alleged that the attack was carried out by suspected armed Fulani militia members, although authorities said the identities of the perpetrators and victims are yet to be confirmed.
