Troops Arrest Five Suspected Illegal Miners, Intercept 10,400 Bags of Black Sand in Bayelsa

Troops of the Joint Task Force South-South, Operation Delta Sanity, have arrested five suspected illegal miners and intercepted a tugboat and barge loaded with about 10,400 bags of suspected illegally mined ilmenite sand, popularly known as black sand, in Bayelsa State.
The operation was conducted at about 12:45 p.m. on August 22, 2026, following intelligence on the movement of suspected illegal miners around Bassambiri Community in Nembe Local Government Area.
Troops of 343 Artillery Regiment responded to the intelligence and intercepted the vessel and its cargo in the area.
Five suspects were arrested during the operation, while the tugboat, barge and suspected illegally mined mineral resources were recovered.
The suspects and recovered items were subsequently handed over to the Police Division in Nembe for further investigation and necessary legal action.
The operation highlights the growing security and economic concerns associated with illegal mining activities in the Niger Delta, including environmental degradation, exploitation of natural resources and the potential financing of organised criminal networks.
Security agencies are expected to intensify intelligence-led operations against illegal mining syndicates while tracing the financiers, owners and intended recipients of illegally extracted mineral resources.
The latest interception also underscores the importance of sustained collaboration between the military, Police, regulatory agencies and host communities in protecting Nigeria’s natural resources and disrupting illicit economic activities.
