Troops of the Nigerian Army have intercepted a group of suspected political thugs and recovered 18 cutlasses along the Illela–Sokoto highway in Sokoto State.
Security sources told Zagazola Makama that the operation was conducted at about 10:00 a.m. on Nov. 4, 2026, by troops of 248 Reconnaissance Battalion deployed at Forward Operating Base (FOB) Illela.
The troops reportedly acted on intelligence about a group of suspected hoodlums allegedly transporting weapons and ammunition into Sokoto town, possibly to exploit the prevailing political atmosphere to perpetrate violence.
The suspects were intercepted while travelling towards Sokoto town to attend a political rally.
During the operation, troops apprehended the suspected political thugs and recovered 18 cutlasses from them.
The recovered items are currently in military custody for further investigation and necessary action.
The operation, conducted under Operation SAVANNAH SHIELD, is part of efforts by security forces to prevent political violence, disrupt the movement of dangerous weapons and maintain public order amid heightened political activities in the state.
