Two Suspected Motorcycle Thieves Killed by Mob in Niger

Two suspected motorcycle thieves have been killed by an angry mob after an alleged attempt to dispossess a commercial motorcyclist of his motorcycle in Magama Local Government Area of Niger State.
The incident occurred at about 6:00 p.m. on August 23, 2026, along the Kontagora–Masamagu route through Ibeto.
According to the Police, the two unidentified suspects boarded an Okada from Kontagora to Masamagu Village before allegedly attempting to divert the rider towards a bush path at a junction.
The rider reportedly resisted the move, leading to a struggle during which the suspects allegedly attempted to take possession of his motorcycle.
The rider raised an alarm, attracting residents who rushed to the scene.
One of the suspects was reportedly caught and beaten by the mob, while the second suspect fled into the bush but was pursued and also killed.
The two suspects were reportedly set ablaze before Police personnel from Masamagu Outstation arrived at the scene.
Police said preliminary information indicated that several motorcycles had previously been stolen along the same corridor.
The motorcycle rider reportedly left the scene with his motorcycle before the arrival of the Police.
The remains of the two suspects were evacuated to General Hospital Nasko, while Police have commenced efforts to identify and arrest those involved in the mob killings.
The incident highlights both the growing concern over motorcycle theft in the area and the dangerous spread of mob justice.
Security agencies are expected to intensify patrols along the affected corridor while community leaders should discourage residents from taking the law into their own hands and ensure suspected criminals are handed over to the Police for prosecution.
