A Civil Defence officer has been killed following an attempted abduction by suspected bandits at the 200 Housing Units area of Odo-Ere Division in Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State.

Security sources disclosed that the incident occurred at about 8:00 p.m. on June 8 when armed men stormed the residence of the officer, identified as Ayo Olukotun, in an apparent attempt to abduct him.

According to the sources, the victim resisted the attackers during the operation, prompting the assailants to open fire on him, hitting him in the right abdomen.

He was immediately rushed to ECWA Hospital, Egbe, for medical treatment but was later confirmed dead by the attending doctor.

The officer’s wife and children were reportedly rescued unharmed during the incident.

Following the attack, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Odo-Ere Division mobilised a joint security response team to the area.

Security operatives have since commenced bush-combing operations aimed at tracking and arresting the fleeing suspects.

Authorities said efforts are ongoing to restore calm and strengthen security presence within the affected community and surrounding areas.

The incident adds to growing concerns over targeted attacks and attempted abductions in parts of Kogi State, where security agencies have intensified operations against armed criminal groups.
